Schaefer was founded by the Schaefer brothers – Frederick and Maximilian in September of 1842. The company went on to become the longest, and last, operating brewery in New York City, and America's oldest lager beer brewing company. Would you believe that back in the late 1800’s there were no fewer than 48 breweries in Brooklyn alone!?! Schaefer was located on the East River between Kent Avenue and South 9th and 10th Streets from the year 1915 on to the closing in 1976.

Schaefer was one of the few brewers to survive and continue to operate during the country’s Volstead Act during prohibition. It was decided that producing “near beer” was better than producing no beer at all, so the company continued to operate producing the non-alcoholic beer (as well as dyes and artificial ice) until the act was lifted.

The Schaefer's built a brand new, ultra-modern brewery just outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1971. The original Schaefer brewery in New York closed in April 1976 and all operations were moved to the new Lehigh Valley plant.

In 1981, the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company was purchased by the Stroh Brewery Company which continued to sell Schaefer Beer until Stroh's was sold to Pabst Brewing Company in 1999.NY-New York Brewery and Alcohol Beer Makers Male Subject Globe Featured Skyline Scene Mountain Scene
