The Consumers Power Company was actually organized in Maine in 1910. In 1968 it was succeeded by Consumer Energy - Michigan's largest electric and natural gas utility. It is the nation's fifth-largest natural gas utility and the country's 10th largest electric utility. Consumers Energy provides electric and natural gas service to more than six million of the state's nine and one-half million residents in all 68 counties of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Consumers Energy is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation.
