American Brands was industrial conglomerate that was once the world's largest cigarette maker. It was formed in 1969 as the parent company for the American Tobacco Company, which was founded 1890. Later the company diversified into numerous other fields and split in two – with the tobacco business being sold to Britain’s Gallaher Tobacco, and the remaining subsidiaries being renamed Fortune Brands. This move was in an effort to distance the company from the ever-growing litigation that began to confront the United States tobacco industry. Fortune was chosen as the company name because it's a term synonymous with great prosperity and is also the name of its Australian liquor subsidiary, a division that had proven highly profitable. With corporate headquarters in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, the company now produces such famous products as Moen faucets MasterLock locks, Jim Beam liquor products, Titleist golf balls and equipment, Foot-Joy shoes, Swingline staplers and Day-Timer organization products.

In a rather ironic twist…. An anagram of “American Brands Inc.” is “Main Brand is Cancer.”NJ-New Jersey Tobacco Companies Under $10 Under $5 Native American Featured
