Carolina Power & Light Company
Carolina Power & Light’s formal entry into the nuclear age begins in 1956, when it joins three of its neighboring utilities (Duke Power, Virginia Electric & Power Company and South Carolina Electric & Gas Company) to form Carolinas-Virginia Nuclear Power Associates, Inc., a non-profit research and development organization. In a meeting held in Charlotte, NC, on October 4, the consortium announces its intention to build one or more experimental nuclear reactors in the area. On October 7, 1960, groundbreaking ceremonies at Parr, SC, mark the beginning of construction of the consortium's 17,000-kilowatt Parr Nuclear Station.

The company operated today as Progress Energy Carolina.
