Chesapeake Biological Laboratories, Inc. was founded in Maryland in 1980. In conjunction with the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine, CBL provided biochemical analysis of synovial fluid samples from racing horses to assist veterinarians in the diagnosis and management of joint disorders. With synovial samples arriving from all over the world, the company gained an international reputation.

In February of 1997, the company’s corporate headquarters, warehouse facilities and shipping and receiving operations were relocated to the Camden Industrial Park facility in downtown Baltimore.

In January 2001, Cangene Corporation of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada purchased CBL. The next year, the company began to produce small pox vaccines. In December 2009, Chesapeake Biological Laboratories, Inc. was renamed Cangene bioPharma, Inc.
