The Suburban Bancorporation was incorporated in 1972 in Maryland, with offices in Hyattsville. Suburban was a holding company for a number of local banking companies and also spawned a financing subsidiary - Suburban Mortgage Associates.

In 1997, Suburban Bancorporation was purchased by Fifth Third Bancorp, a holding company of one of Central Ohio's largest banks.
