Durham Coal & Iron Company
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Durham, Georgia, was known as a booming coal mining town. The Durham Coal and Iron Company was a major supplier of coal for many Chattanooga industries.

The company was acquired by the Tennessee Products Company on August 9, 1926. At the time of the purchase, the company owned over 10,000 acres of coal, iron and timber lands and mines in the Sequatchie Valley.

However, during the 1940’s and 50’s, demand waned and the Durham mines closed.
