DPL Inc., through its subsidiary The Dayton Power and Light Company, is a public utility that sells electricity to residential, commercial, industrial, and governmental customers in a 6,000-square-mile area of West Central Ohio. Prior to 2000, DP&L; also distributed natural gas within its service area; its gas operations were divested in the Fall of 2000 to Vectren, an Indiana company that formed earlier that year.

In 1925, DP&L; became a full-service gas, electric, steam and water utility with its acquisition of the Dayton Gas Company, which complemented its 1914 purchase of the Wilmington Water Company.
