The Gaylord Entertainment Company operates a number of hotel, resort, and media companies that were built by Edward Gaylord. It was previously a subsidiary of the Oklahoma City-based Oklahoma Publishing Company, which is owned by the Gaylord family and publishes the Daily Oklahoman
newspaper. Robert Rowling, the Texas billionaire who owns TRT Holdings, bought 14 percent of Gaylord stock in early 2008. Later that year, Gaylord rejected Rowling's bid to increase TRT's stake to 30 percent, saying there would be no benefit to the company and also noting TRT's potential conflict of interest, since TRT owns the Omni Hotel chain, which competes with Gaylord for conference and convention business.
Facilities owned by Gaylord Entertainment include: Gaylord Hotels, Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center (Nashville, Tennessee), Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center (Orlando, Florida), Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center (Grapevine, TX), Gaylord National Harbor Resort & Convention Center (National Harbor, Maryland), Grand Ole Opry, WSM Radio, Nashville, Wildhorse Saloon, The General Jackson Showboat.
The company at one time also owned: WKY Radio, Oklahoma City, Opryland USA theme park, Bass Pro Shops' Outdoor World (minority interest), The Nashville Network, Country Music Television, and the Nashville Predators hockey team (minority interest).
Gaylord Entertainment also produced the long-running comedy/variety series Hee Haw
(initially out of the studios of WTVF in Nashville) and distributed the program over their television stations and in syndication.
