The McKinley-Lanning Loan & Trust Company was established in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1879 and incorporated in 1888. The company’s offices were located in the Girard Building. The company had a western office in Hastings, Nebraska. The company’s promotional material stated “First mortgage farm loans a specialty. Choice municipal securities negotiated.”

This piece is signed by W. H. Lanning as the company Vice President. Lanning was a prominent Hastings businessman who donated a statue in the memory of his daughter to Smith College. The fountain, located near the school’s botanic garden, honors Lanning’s daughter Mary, a member of the Class of 1912 who died of pneumonia during Christmas vacation her sophomore year. The figure in the middle is a young woman, but it's not Mary Lanning. Instead, it is known as "Marguerite" -- a replica of a statue by sculptor Jean Gautherin that adorns a fountain in the Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy.

Lanning also started Hastings’ hospital to honor his daughter. At the time of her death, Hastings had no hospital to treat her.PA-Pennsylvania NE-Nebraska Finance and Related Banks and Credit Unions Animal Featured Horse Featured Farming Scene Body Adornments
