The Atlantic, Mississippi & Ohio Railroad was formed on November 12, 1870 from the consolidation of the City Point Railroad, Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad, and Virginia & Tennessee Railroad. Mainline trackage totaled 408 miles, stretching from Norfolk, VA to Bristol at the Tennessee state line. The line was sold under foreclosure on February 9, 1881 to E. W. Clark & Co., and subsequently renamed the Norfolk & Western Railroad.
