Predecessors to Chicago, Indiana and Southern Railroad included the Indiana, Illinois and Iowa Railroad and the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad. The line eventually acquired the Danville and Indiana Harbor Railroad before being controlled by the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad.

In the end, the line became part of the mighty New York Central Railroad.
