General Steel Industries was founded in 1953 in Granite City, Illinois. The company acquired the St. Louis Car Company in 1955. GSI was known to have made caboose trucks for the Union Pacific Railroad, air-conditioned aluminum cars for the New York Port Authority's Hudson Tube line to New Jersey, 430 picture-windowed World's Fair cars for the New York subway (1964), and freight cars for the Great Northern Railway.

GSI continued operations into the 1970’s.
