Construction of the Los Angeles & San Gabriel Valley Railroad commenced in 1884, led by a corporation headed by the Honorable J. F. Crank, of Pasadena. Its completion to Pasadena was celebrated by an excursion, September 17, 1885. In 1887, the line was extended to the San Gabriel river. Later that year, ownership was transferred to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
