This line was acquired by the Southern Railway in 1974, before becoming part of the Norfolk Southern Corporation in 1982 (the result of a merger between the Southern and the Norfolk and Western Railway) . The line currently operates approximately 21,800 route miles in 22 states, the District of Columbia and the province of Ontario.

The roots of this company date back to 1883, when the Elizabeth City & Norfolk RR was renamed the Norfolk Southern RR. The line entered receivership in 1889, before merging as the Norfolk & Southern RR in 1891.

In 1900, the company merged with the Norfolk, Virginia Beach & Southern Railroad.

In 1904, the company merged with the Chesapeake Transit Company, and the Washington & Plymouth Railroad.

In 1906, the company reorganized as the Norfolk & Southern Railway (Norfolk & Southern Railroad, Virginia & Carolina Coast Railroad, Pamlico Oriental & Western Railway, Raleigh & Pamlico Sound Railroad, Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad, and Beaufort & Western Railroad).

In 1908, the company was again entered receivership, before being reorganized in 1910 as the Norfolk & Southern Railroad (again).

In 1914, the company absorbed the Raleigh Charlotte & Southern subsidiary.

In 1920, the company merged with the Durham & South Carolina Railroad.

In 1932, the company entered receivership again, which triggered a series of lease defaults, abandonment of lines and terminal sales.

In 1942, the company reorganized as the Norfolk Southern Railway (on January 21).

Finally, after 32 more tumultuous years, the company was purchased by the once mighty Southern.
