The Portland Terminal Company was chartered in July of 1911 (it was previously known as the Portland Union Railway Station, which opened in 1888). The location was a prime terminus for the Boston and Maine and the Maine Central, as well as an important link with two major ship building yards (Liberty & Victory) that were constructed in South Portland.
