At the end of the 19th century (when this certificate would have been issued), Syracuse’ streetcar industry was under the control of two companies, the Syracuse Rapid Transit Railway Company, with a capital investment of $4,000,000 and the Syracuse East Side Railway Company, with capital of $250,000. At the time, the city was served by six railroads as well: the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western; the New York Central & Hudson River; the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg; the West Shore; the Chenango Branch of the West Shore; and the Syracuse, Phoenix & Oswego.
